Healthy Summer Picnics

We all love to picnic! What would summer be like without grilling outside? No need to break the healthy eating habits! What can we do for a tasty and healthy picnic? Read below or watch Luisa’s latest segment on WFMZ 69 News with Eve Russo HERE.

Choose the Right Meat:

Burgers and chicken bring plenty of flavor to your picnic. Traditional hot dogs might not be the healthiest choice, you can opt for organic versions if trying to satisfy a younger crowd. For a sandwich that doesn’t weigh you down, wrap them in refreshing lettuce leaves or try using collard greens for an extra health boost.

Tasty Toppings and Condiments:

All the traditional toppings are acceptable such as pickles, mustard, and ketchup only if using organic.

Homemade Sides:

Skip store-bought salads, where the ingredients can be loaded with preservatives. Homemade is always a better option. Or instead of salads - use a variety of colorful veggies like zucchini, yellow squash, asparagus, peppers, and cauliflower. Sprinkle sea salt and pepper, baste them with some olive oil, and add them to your grill. If space is limited, grill the veggies first because even if they are served cold, they are still delicious.

Dips too?

We have options: organic salsa, hummus, and guacamole. If you are looking for quick – you can do all store bought, (Costco) but homemade guacamole is the best. Be sure to check the hummus label for any sneaky preservatives. Slice upsome fresh veggies to dip, or if you're in the mood for chips, consider cassava orplantain chips for a healthier crunch.

And Drinks?

Water will keep you hydrated, but also try a glass of refreshing lemonade made using monk fruit.

Sweet Treats?

No picnic is complete without juicy watermelon! But indulging can be healthy too. Serve up strawberry mousse sweetened with maple syrup.

It’s easy to rethink your picnic this summer. Even if you’re not hosting the picnic, any of these suggestions would be healthy addition to any gathering.
